In his 2020 film
Close Encounters of The Fifth Kind, Dr. Stephen Greer asserts that the US government uses Hollywood movies to paint aliens as hostile and threatening. However, many of these movies are based on stories and novels which predate the flying saucer phenomenon. These include War of the Worlds (1898), First Men in the Moon (1901), the Colour out of Space (1927), the Dunwich Horror (1928), Flash Gordon (1934) and Who Goes There? (1939).
